Because the pattern is small, the repeat hardly matters. You can cut freely without having to centre motifs, and you use less fabric than with large prints.

That makes this fabric the first choice for facings, yokes, linings and backings, for patchwork backgrounds and for anything that should stay calm next to a bold fabric.

Handle it like any woven cotton: pre wash, universal needle, straight stitch, finish the edges. With very pale grounds it is worth checking coloured fabric separately before the first wash.

Why are small patterns so popular for combining?

Because from a distance they read as a surface and do not draw attention from the main motif. At the same time they are livelier than a pure solid and disguise small irregularities.

Do I need to watch the grain direction with dots?

Not with evenly scattered dots. If the dots are arranged in rows, lay all pieces in the same direction, otherwise the rows visibly tilt at the seam.

Are dotted fabrics suitable for baby clothes?

Yes. The fabric is light, breathable and washable. Make sure it drapes softly and has no harsh finish, and wash it before first wear.
