The big advantage: you save yourself the job of joining several layers, because outer fabric, wadding and quilting are already bonded together. Jackets and bags are therefore much quicker to sew than from separate components.

While sewing it is important to finish the cut edges promptly, otherwise the layers can separate at the borders. Use a slightly longer stitch and a walking foot so the layers do not shift against each other. When pressing, use little pressure, otherwise the wadding is flattened along the seams and the quilted pattern loses its effect.

Good to know

Do I still need wadding with a quilted fabric?

No, the padding is already between the layers. Additional wadding would only make the piece unnecessarily thick. Only if you want a lot of body, in a firm bag for instance, is a further interlining worthwhile.

How do I finish the edges?

Ideally straight after cutting, with an overlocker or zigzag, so the layers do not separate. For a neat finish inside, bias binding that encloses the edge completely works well too.

Are quilted fabrics suitable for jackets?

Yes, that is their main use. They warm lightly, add little bulk and keep their shape. For colder days they are often combined with a windproof outer fabric or a satin lining.
