Sweat angeraut

Brushed sweatshirt fabric, often called winter sweat, is softly raised on the inside. The fine pile traps air and therefore keeps you noticeably warmer than unbrushed french terry. Typical projects are jumpers, hoodies, jackets and children's clothes for the cold season.

During brushing the loops on the reverse are opened up, creating a soft and fluffy surface. That makes the fabric warmer and more pleasant directly against the skin without becoming stiff – it stays stretchy and drapes softly.

The fabric is offered plain for combining and printed for the main pieces. As it is thicker than jersey it adds a little bulk: for close fitting patterns choose a slightly more generous size, and pick cuffing firm enough to hold the hem.

Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. Where several layers meet – at the hood or the sleeve hem for instance – flattening the seam allowance or using a height compensation tool helps the machine to keep running evenly.

Good to know

Is brushed sweatshirting warmer than french terry?

Yes, noticeably. The raised pile on the reverse holds air and works like a thin layer of insulation. French terry with open loops is lighter and better suited to mild days.

Can I tumble dry brushed sweatshirting?

Follow the care instructions given with the individual article. As a rule the pile mats more easily at high temperatures and the fabric may shrink, so air drying is the gentler option.

Does the pile flatten over time?

With heavy wear the fibres do settle somewhat, which is normal. Washing inside out and without fabric softener keeps the surface fluffy for longer, as does avoiding high spin speeds.
