Stretchy fabrics give way with every wearing. A design stabilised only during stitching will distort over time. Cut away stabiliser keeps the area in shape permanently, because it remains in the garment.

Since it stays in the fabric, handle matters. Soft qualities add less bulk on children's clothes and shirts; for bags and firm fabrics the stabiliser may be heavier.

After stitching, trim the excess back to a few millimetres with small, sharp scissors. Take care not to cut through the fabric behind it.

Why does the stabiliser stay in the fabric?

Because stretchy material would otherwise give way and distort the design. The remaining stabiliser keeps the area in shape even after many washes.

Does the stabiliser add bulk under a shirt?

A little, so a soft quality is worth choosing for clothing worn next to the skin. For bags, cushions and firm fabrics it can be heavier, as it is not noticeable there.

How close to the design may I cut?

Leave two to three millimetres. Cut closer and the edge of the design can work loose over time; much more excess shows through thin fabric.
