Iron on stabiliser is bonded to the fabric before stitching. Nothing can shift, and even thin or stretchy material lies flat in the hoop – particularly helpful with small designs and tight areas.

The stabiliser carries an adhesive layer activated by ironing. Unlike loosely placed backing it bonds with the fabric, so both layers move together while stitching.

That matters most where the fabric itself has little body: with muslin, thin jersey or light wovens. With appliqué, too, the stabiliser holds the edges cleanly in place.

Press at the stated temperature and without steam, or the bond forms unevenly. After stitching, the excess can be peeled or trimmed away depending on the type.

When is iron on stabiliser worthwhile?

With thin and stretchy fabrics and with small designs where little area remains in the hoop. The firm bond stops fabric and stabiliser shifting against each other.

What temperature should I use?

The one stated on the packaging, usually a medium setting and without steam. Too hot and the layer bonds unevenly, too cool and it does not hold.

Can I use iron on stabiliser on delicate fabrics?

Only if the fabric tolerates the ironing temperature. With velvet, faux leather and coated fabrics, a self adhesive or loosely placed stabiliser is the safe choice.
