In machine embroidery the stitch density pulls at the material. Without stabilising, the fabric distorts and the design turns crooked and puckered. The stabiliser absorbs this pull and keeps the surface flat.

After stitching, the excess is torn carefully away. Remnants under dense stitching stay put and cause no trouble there. What matters is working close to the design and not tugging at it.

For stretchy fabrics this type is only partly suitable: jersey usually needs a cut away stabiliser or an extra layer, because tear away does not hold the stretch permanently.

Good to know

When should I use tear away stabiliser?

With firm fabrics and woven material such as cotton, linen and canvas. For jersey and other stretchy fabric a cut away stabiliser is more stable, as it stays in the fabric permanently.

How do I remove it without damaging the design?

Hold the embroidery with one hand and tear the stabiliser away close to the edge with the other. Do not pull at the design itself, or the outline stitches loosen.

How many layers do I need?

Usually one. With dense designs or thin fabric, two layers can make sense. If the fabric still moves in the hoop, one layer is not enough.
