The fibres are obtained from bamboo and processed into viscose. The result is a material that drapes more softly than cotton and takes up moisture quickly – two properties that matter especially for baby items.

Depending on the construction, bamboo fabrics come as an absorbent towelling quality for cloths and inserts or as a smooth fabric for clothing. Both feel soft and are gentle on sensitive skin.

When sewing, bamboo viscose behaves like other viscose: it is smooth and likes to slip. Work with a fine needle, a calm hand and plenty of clips, and the edges stay neat.

Why is bamboo suitable for baby items?

Because the material is very soft and absorbs moisture quickly. Both matter for changing mats, cloths and clothing in direct contact with the skin, where a rough fabric soon becomes uncomfortable.

Does bamboo fabric shrink in the wash?

It can shrink a little, so wash it before cutting. Follow the care instructions given with the article and choose the temperature you intend to use for the finished item.

Is bamboo stretchy?

That depends on the construction: as a knit it gives way, as a woven fabric hardly at all. Check which version you have before cutting, because the pattern has to match.
