Costume fabrics rarely need to be especially durable, but they should work in the light. Shiny and colourful qualities are used more often than in everyday clothing, and unusual surfaces are welcome too.

Conveniently, many of these fabrics do not fray or can be sewn up quickly – costumes are often made at short notice. For capes, skirts and overlays, straight seams and simple shapes are entirely sufficient.

Think about comfort while sewing: a costume is worn for hours. Loose shapes, stretchy cuffs and a smooth lining at scratchy spots make all the difference.

That depends on the design. Shiny and flowing fabrics work in photographs and under lights, firm qualities hold capes and hats in shape. What matters is that the material is comfortable to wear.

How do I sew a costume quickly?

Choose a simple pattern with few pieces and straight seams. Elastic instead of zips, ties instead of buttons and fabrics that do not fray save the most time.

Do costume fabrics scratch the skin?

Some effect fabrics can feel uncomfortable. Add a smooth lining at the neck, the arms and anywhere the fabric sits directly on the skin – then the costume can be worn for hours.
