Because the colour penetrates the fibre instead of being printed on, batik looks similarly strong on both sides. That is useful wherever the fabric is turned back or both faces are visible.

In the patchwork world batik fabrics are popular because they are densely woven and stay clean when cut. The colour gradients make a surface built from many small pieces look lively rather than flat.

Differences between two lengths of the same article are normal with hand dyed fabric. If you need a larger area to match, it is best to buy the quantity in one piece.

Why does every batik piece look different?

Because the fabrics are dyed by hand. Wax application, dye bath and drying cannot be repeated exactly. These variations are intended and are part of the appeal of the material.

Does batik fabric bleed when washed?

The first wash can release a little colour. Wash new batik separately and not too hot, after which it is usually colourfast.

Is batik suitable for clothing?

Yes, particularly for summer dresses, tunics and blouses. The fabric is densely woven yet light. Bear in mind that dense batik flows less than a loose weave.
