Thanks to its higher weight canvas stands up on its own. A bag therefore often needs no extra interfacing, while thinner cotton would collapse without it.

That also makes it interesting for home decor: cushion covers keep their edges, baskets stand, curtains hang heavy and calm. Printed qualities add motif and colour to the room.

When sewing, choose a stronger needle and a longer stitch. Where several layers meet, trimming the seam allowances helps the machine run over them cleanly.

Do canvas bags still need interfacing?

Usually not. Canvas stands on its own. Only if the bag should be especially rigid or carry heavy items is extra reinforcement at base and handles worthwhile.

Which needle suits canvas?

A jeans or universal needle in size 90 to 100. With several layers the jeans needle is the safe choice, as it penetrates the dense weave better.

Does canvas shrink in the wash?

Yes, like other cotton. For bags that hardly matters; for cushion covers and curtains you should wash beforehand so the measurements are right later.
