Coated cotton carries a thin plastic layer on its face. It can be wiped clean, repels water and does not fray – which makes it the fabric for bags, wash bags, bibs and tablecloths.

Beneath the coating lies ordinary woven cotton, on top sits a matt or slightly glossy layer. The handle stays textile while the surface becomes hard wearing.

When sewing, the material behaves differently from uncoated fabric: the presser foot tends to stick, and needle marks stay visible. Work with clips instead of pins and sew with a slightly longer stitch.

A teflon foot or a strip of paper under the foot solves the sticking. Press from the reverse only and at moderate heat, because the coating does not tolerate heat.

Is coated cotton waterproof?

It is water repellent, not waterproof. Drops bead up and can be wiped away, but the needle holes remain permeable. For genuine waterproofing you need welded seams.

How do I stop the fabric sticking to the presser foot?

With a teflon foot, a roller foot or a strip of baking paper between foot and fabric. Slightly longer stitches also help, as the fabric then feeds more evenly.

Do I need to finish the edges?

No, the coating holds the weave together. You can leave the edge raw or topstitch it if you want a neat finish.
