The double layer makes the fabric more opaque than its low weight suggests. At the same time it stays breathable, which is why it is so popular for summer clothing and baby items.

Typical projects are scarves, muslin squares, blankets, blouses, loose dresses and harem trousers. The fabric drapes softly and falls into small folds instead of standing away.

When cutting, let muslin lie flat and do not pull it, or the crinkled texture will distort. Sew with a fine universal needle; finish the edges, as the light fabric frays easily.

Why is muslin made of two layers?

Two thin layers are joined at regular intervals. That makes the fabric more opaque and softer than a single layer without making it heavy.

Does muslin shrink?

Yes, noticeably. Wash the fabric before cutting, ideally as hot as you will later wash the finished piece. After that hardly anything changes.

Is muslin suitable for babies?

Yes, which is why it is used so often for them. It is soft, breathable and can be washed hot. Make sure no loose threads form and finish the edges carefully.
