The print sits on the face of the weave, the reverse stays lighter. That is normal and only noticeable where both sides show – on cuffs or facings, for instance.

With patterns it pays to consider the repeat before cutting. Large motifs want to be placed deliberately so they are not cut off at a seam. Allow a little more fabric than the pattern states.

Handle printed cotton like plain: pre wash, sew with a universal needle and straight stitch, finish the edges. When pressing, keep the print face down so the colour does not become shiny.

What is a pattern repeat?

The distance after which a pattern starts again. The larger the repeat, the more fabric you need if motifs are to match at seams or if a motif has to sit centred.

Does the print fade in the wash?

Hardly at all with normal washing. Still, wash colourful fabric inside out and not too hot, and do not dry it in bright sun – that protects the colours noticeably.

Can I use patterned cotton for patchwork?

Yes, that is one of its main purposes. Use similar fabric weights within one project so the seams lie evenly and the quilt does not distort later.
