Felt is not woven or knitted but made by compressing fibres. It therefore has no grain and does not fray at any edge. That makes it the most straightforward material for decoration, appliqué and craft projects.

As felt has no selvedge, you can cut it in any direction – tight curves, points and small shapes all stay clean. No edge finishing is needed at all, which makes the material especially suitable for projects with children.

Felt is offered in several thicknesses. Thinner qualities are easy to sew by machine and to appliqué, thicker ones stand up on their own and suit baskets, coasters and decorative objects. Gluing works too, as long as the adhesive is suitable for textiles.

Can I sew felt on a machine?

Yes, thinner grades without any trouble using a universal needle and straight stitch. For thick qualities you need a stronger needle, a longer stitch and a little patience so the feed stays even.

Does felt fray at the edges?

No. The fibres are matted together rather than woven as threads, so every cut edge stays closed. Shapes can be cut out without any further finishing.

Can felt be washed?

Only to a limited extent. Depending on the fibre blend, felt can shrink further with heat and movement. For decoration and crafting that does not matter; for washability follow the information given with the article.
