Unlike woven velvet, nicky is knitted and therefore gives way across the width. That makes it comfortable and easy to put on, particularly for small children.

The pile lies in one direction. Cut all pieces facing the same way, otherwise they appear to be different shades. While sewing the layers shift easily: tacking or a walking foot holds them together.

Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. Nicky sheds lint while cutting, so it is worth cleaning the work surface and the machine afterwards.

Is nicky the same as velvet?

No. Nicky is a knitted fabric and therefore stretchy, while woven velvet is not. Both have a pile, but nicky is softer, more elastic and easier to care for – ideal for children's clothes.

Do I have to consider the pile direction?

Yes. The pile lies in one direction and looks darker from above. If pieces are cut facing opposite ways, the finished garment looks patchy even though the fabric is a single colour.

Which needle do I need?

A jersey needle with a rounded tip, because nicky is a knitted fabric. Sew with a stretch stitch so the seam gives way when the garment is put on and does not tear.
