The pile gives nicky its look and its handle. It lies in one direction, which is why the fabric appears lighter or darker depending on the angle. When cutting, all pieces must therefore lie the same way.

Because the pile sheds when cut, it is worth working over a surface you can shake out and vacuuming the machine afterwards. The fabric also likes to slip – clips hold the layers better than pins.

Sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. Press only from the reverse and with little pressure so the pile is not flattened.

Good to know

Why does nicky look different depending on direction?

Because the pile lies one way and reflects light differently. Smoothed downwards the surface looks lighter, against the pile darker. Lay all pieces the same way.

Is nicky suitable for babies?

Yes, it is soft and kind to the skin. Make sure the pile is firmly anchored and does not shed fibres, and wash the fabric before first use.

How do I keep shedding under control while sewing?

Cut over a surface you can shake out and clean the machine regularly. A scrap of fabric under the presser foot catches additional lint.
