Terry towelling is the classic towel fabric: many small loops stand on the surface, take up water and make the fabric particularly absorbent. It is used for towels, bathrobes, bibs, flannels and changing mats.

The absorbency comes from the surface: every loop increases the area that can take up moisture. The denser the loops stand, the more water the fabric holds – and the heavier it becomes when wet.

Terry towelling sheds a lot of lint while sewing, so it is worth vacuuming the machine and the work surface in between. Finish the edges promptly, as they fray otherwise. Pre-washing matters: terry shrinks noticeably in the first wash, and towels should still fit afterwards.

Do I have to pre-wash terry towelling?

Definitely. Terry shrinks noticeably in the first wash. Pre-wash the fabric at the temperature you intend to use for the finished towel, otherwise the measurements will not be right afterwards.

Which needle suits terry towelling?

A universal needle in a medium size is sufficient. More important is a slightly longer stitch so the seam does not pull together among the loops, and a calm hand guiding the thick material.

Why does terry shed so much lint while sewing?

Cutting severs loops which then release loose fibres. This settles after the first wash. Clean the bobbin area of your machine after the project so lint does not build up there.
