Tüll

Tulle is a fine net fabric that weighs almost nothing and still creates volume. Depending on the quality it drapes softly or stands away from the body. It is used for skirts, costumes, veils, petticoats and decoration.

Because tulle is a net, the edges do not fray. You can leave them raw, which saves a great deal of work on layered skirts. Several layers on top of each other create volume without making the garment heavy.

While sewing, tulle likes to catch on the presser foot or slide away. A fine needle, low presser foot pressure and tissue paper under the seam all help. For hems, leaving the edge raw is usually the nicer solution, because any folded edge shows through the sheer fabric.

Do I have to finish the edges of tulle?

No. The net has no threads that could fray, so cut edges stay clean. On layered skirts they are deliberately left raw so the hem stays light and adds no bulk.

How many layers do I need for a tulle skirt?

That depends on the volume you want: a few layers drape softly, many stand away from the body. It is best to try with offcuts to see the effect before cutting the full amount.

Which needle suits tulle?

A fine needle in a small size so the net structure is not damaged. Reduce the presser foot pressure as well, then the light fabric is not pulled into the needle plate.
