A dungaree clip comes in two parts: the clip on the strap and the button or bar on the bib. The width has to match the strap – too narrow and it slips in the clip, too wide and it cannot be threaded.

The strap becomes adjustable through a bar inside the clip, around which the tape is looped. As with webbing, leave the end long enough not to slip out with every movement.

Belt buckles need a tape firm enough to hold its shape. Webbing, faux leather or a folded fabric strip with interfacing all work well.

The fixing to the fabric should always be reinforced. A piece of interfacing under the attachment point spreads the pull, or the strap tears out exactly where it holds.

How do I find the right size?

By the width of the strap or webbing. The clip has to sit snugly: tapes that are too narrow slip through, too wide cannot be threaded.

How do I make the strap adjustable?

Through the bar inside the clip: the tape is looped around it and fed back. Leave enough overlap so it does not work loose while worn.

Do I have to reinforce the attachment point?

Yes. The whole weight of the trousers pulls on the strap. A piece of firm interfacing or faux leather under the seam spreads the pull and stops the fabric tearing.
