Jackets and coats need more preparation than a shirt: interfacing at the collar and button band, a lining and often a fastening. Anyone taking one on should read the instructions through once before making the first cut.

Suitable materials are found in the related categories: coating fabrics for the outside, lining fabrics for the inside, interfacing for stability and buttons or fastenings to close it.

Allow extra length with patterned fabrics. Checks and directional motifs should meet at the seams, and that needs more fabric than the stated requirement.

Are the patterns suitable for beginners?

Simpler designs yes, jackets and coats less so as a first project. Start with a dress or a shirt and move on to collars, linings and button bands once the basics are secure.

Which supplies do I need for a jacket?

Usually interfacing for the collar and facings, lining fabric for the inside, plus buttons, snaps or a zip. Exactly what is needed is listed in the materials section of the pattern.

How much fabric do I need for checked material?

Allow at least one extra pattern repeat. Only then can the pieces be shifted so the checks meet at the seams.
