Paper patterns arrive printed and are ready to use. If you want to sew several sizes from one sheet, trace the line you need onto tissue paper – the original sheet then stays complete.

Check the recommended fabric type before cutting. Patterns for knits rely on the stretch of the material; sewn in firm woven cloth they turn out tighter and are harder to put on.

Choose the size by your measurements, not by your usual clothing size. If your measurements fall between two sizes, take the smaller one in stretchy fabrics and the larger one in wovens.

How do I choose the right size?

Measure your chest, waist and hips and compare the figures with the size chart of the pattern. Your usual clothing size is not a reliable guide, because manufacturers cut differently.

Can I combine sizes?

Yes, that is common practice. Trace the smaller size at the top and the larger one at the bottom, for instance, and join the lines in a smooth transition at the waist.

What do the numbers of the designs mean?

They identify the individual design within the range. That helps when you want to sew a pattern again or recommend it to someone.
