The diameter is chosen so the cord can be gripped comfortably. When pulling a hood or waistband tight, that is the difference between pleasant and unpleasant.

For the look, it is worth matching cord and cuffing in colour or contrasting them deliberately. Both work, as long as the decision is carried through.

Make sure eyelets and cord stoppers match the size. A five millimetre cord jams in hardware designed for three.

Special rules apply to children's clothing: hoods on children's garments should not have continuous cords, as they can catch. Use cuffing or short ties there instead.

Because this size grips well without adding bulk. It is thick enough not to cut in when pulled and thin enough for most eyelets and cord stoppers.
