The mechanism is always the same: a spring presses a pin against the cord. Pressing releases the grip, letting go restores it. That only works if the cord is the right size.

Cords that are too thin slip through, cords that are too thick cannot be threaded or jam permanently. Check the stated cord size before buying.

For two cord ends there are stoppers with two holes, for a single end ones with one. On a hood the two hole version is usual, so both sides adjust together.

A knot behind the stopper keeps it from being lost. Alternatively fit an end cap, which secures the stopper against slipping off at the same time.

Which size suits my cord?

The details with the article state the matching cord size. Cords that are too thin do not hold, too thick cannot be threaded – measure the diameter if in doubt.

One hole or two?

Two holes for hoods and bags where both ends adjust together. One hole is enough when only a single end runs through, on a bag for instance.

How do I stop the stopper sliding off?

With a knot behind it or a fitted end cap. Both keep it on the cord even when the garment is put on and taken off often.
