Eyelet patches are small reinforcements with a ready made opening for a cord to pass through. They are simply stitched on – no pliers, no setting tool and no metal against the skin.

On a hoodie or drawstring bag the cord opening is the weak point. Without reinforcement the fabric tears there over time. A patch spreads the pull over a larger area.

Compared with metal eyelets, patches have two advantages: they need no tool and they do not scratch. On children's clothes in particular that counts.

Stitch all the way round close to the edge, ideally with a slightly longer stitch. With faux leather patches use clips instead of pins, as needle marks stay visible.

Attach the patch before closing the drawstring channel. Afterwards the spot is hard to reach and the seam would have to pass through several layers.

What is the advantage over metal eyelets?

No tool is needed and nothing scratches. Metal eyelets require pliers and can feel uncomfortable against the skin on children's clothes; a fabric patch stays soft.

How do I attach faux leather patches?

Fix them with clips, set a longer stitch and sew all round close to the edge. Pins leave visible holes in faux leather that stay.
