Because felt is made of compressed fibres rather than woven threads, every cut edge stays closed. You can cut out shapes freely – stars, letters, animals – without having to finish anything afterwards.

It can be worked with needle and thread, by machine or with fabric glue. For children, sewing with a thick needle and embroidery thread is a good start, because the felt is firm enough not to tear.

Typical projects are coasters, garlands, advent calendars, appliqué and finger puppets. Felt is also useful as a base inside boxes or under jewellery, because it is soft and does not slip.

Do I have to finish craft felt?

No. The fibres are matted and do not come undone at the cut edge. That makes felt the ideal material for cut-out shapes, letters and appliqué.

Can felt be glued instead of sewn?

Yes, with fabric or craft glue. For decoration that is perfectly sufficient. If the piece will later be washed or heavily used, a seam holds far better.

Is felt suitable for projects with children?

Very much so. It does not fray, can be sewn with a blunt needle and forgives inaccurate cutting. It also does not tear if the thread is pulled a little too firmly.
