Hook and loop tape always consists of two parts: the hook tape with its stiff hooks and the loop tape with soft loops. The two are placed opposite each other so they grip when pressed together.

For sewing on, a straight stitch all the way round close to the edge is enough. Self adhesive versions hold on smooth surfaces, but suit textiles only to a limited extent because the adhesive comes away in the wash.

Take care not to place the hook tape where it meets delicate fabric: the hooks pull threads out of knits and roughen soft surfaces. The fastening should be closed when washing.

Which side goes where?

The soft loop tape goes where there may be skin contact or delicate fabric. The stiff hook tape sits on the opposite side, on the bag flap or the strap for instance.

Can I use self adhesive tape on fabric?

Only to a limited extent. The adhesive holds well on smooth surfaces but comes away from textiles in the wash. For clothing and bags, sewing it on is the more durable solution.

Why should the fastening be closed when washing?

Because open hook tape catches on other laundry and pulls threads out. Closed, the hooks grip their own loop tape and do no damage.
