The needle size determines how firm or loose the knitting turns out. It depends on the yarn: needles that are too fine make the fabric dense and stiff, needles that are too thick leave it looking holey.

Circular needles consist of two tips with a cable in between. They suit hats, necklines and everything worked in the round, and carry the weight of larger pieces better than straight needles.

Small tools make the work considerably easier: stitch markers indicate the start of a round or an increase, stitch holders keep stitches on hold, and a row counter helps you keep track.

Which needle size suits my yarn?

There is usually a recommendation on the yarn band. From there you can go one size either way: finer needles for firmer knitting, thicker ones for a looser, softer result.

What are circular needles for?

For everything worked in the round: hats, socks, necklines and jumpers without side seams. They are also comfortable for wide pieces, because the cable carries the weight.

What is a stitch marker?

A small ring hung between the stitches to mark a place – the start of a round or an increase, for instance. That way you do not have to count again each time to see where you are.
