What is a height compensation tool?

A small plate placed under the presser foot where several layers of fabric meet. It keeps the foot level so the feed continues evenly and no stitches are skipped.

What do I need a seam ripper for?

For opening misplaced seams and cutting buttonholes. The point slides under the thread and the blade cuts it – considerably quicker and safer than using scissors.

Does every accessory fit every machine?

No. Presser feet and attachments differ between manufacturers and mounting systems. Check which system your machine uses before buying, and keep the manual at hand – it usually names the type.
