There are two distinct uses. As ordinary sewing thread it joins thick layers durably; as topstitching thread it runs visibly across pockets, hems and yokes and shapes the look of the finished piece.

For topstitching, the thread belongs in the needle only. Keep ordinary thread in the bobbin, or the seam turns too thick and the tension can no longer be set cleanly.

The needle has to match the thread weight. A denim needle in size 90 to 100 has a sufficiently large eye; with a fine needle the thick thread frays and breaks.

For visible seams a longer stitch is worthwhile. The typical denim look comes precisely from those clearly placed, long stitches.

Do I need denim thread in the bobbin too?

No, quite the opposite. Use ordinary sewing thread in the bobbin, or the seam turns too thick and the tension can no longer be set properly.

Which needle suits denim thread?

A denim needle in size 90 to 100. Its eye is large enough for the thicker thread; a fine needle roughens it until it breaks mid seam.

How do I get the typical denim look?

Topstitching thread in the needle, a longer stitch and steady guiding. Those visible, long stitches are what set it apart from an invisible construction seam.
