The shine comes from a metallic coated film around a core. This construction makes the thread more sensitive to friction than smooth polyester – it breaks sooner when the machine runs fast.

Three settings help: sew more slowly, reduce the upper tension slightly and use a needle with a larger, smoother eye. A metallic or topstitch needle is made for it.

Keep ordinary thread in the bobbin. Two metallic threads on top of each other add bulk and harden the seam without the effect looking twice as good.

The thread is not meant for large areas. As an outline, topstitch or accent on edges and pockets it comes into its own.

Why does my metallic thread keep breaking?

Usually the machine runs too fast or the tension is too high. Reduce both and use a needle with a larger eye so there is less friction.

Does metallic thread go in the bobbin too?

No, keep ordinary thread there. Two metallic threads harden and thicken the seam without showing the shine any better, and the tension becomes almost impossible to balance.

How do I wash seams with metallic thread?

Cool, inside out and without tumble drying. Friction and heat damage the coating, and the shine fades with every hot wash.
