The sheen comes from smooth, continuous filaments. They reflect light evenly, which makes stitched areas look three dimensional rather than flat.

The common weight is no. 40 and suits almost every design. For small lettering and fine detail a thinner thread is better, as the stitches otherwise run together and the design fills in.

A thinner speciality thread is used in the bobbin. It adds less bulk, the reverse stays flat and the finished design does not turn stiff.

It is better not to mix colours across manufacturers: sheen and colour depth differ, and stitched side by side the difference shows immediately.

Can I use sewing thread for embroidery?

Technically yes, visually it rarely convinces. Sewing thread is duller and thicker, breaks more often at speed and leaves the stitching looking flat.

Which weight do I need?

No. 40 as the standard. Only for very small lettering and fine detail is a thinner thread worthwhile, so the stitches do not run together.

Why do I need a special bobbin thread?

Because it is thinner and keeps the reverse flat. With ordinary thread the design turns thicker and harder, which is uncomfortable on clothing.
