Because several threads work together in an overlock seam, the individual thread does not have to be as strong as for a straight seam. Finer thread gives a softer, flatter result against the skin.

Colour choice is easier here: in the finished seam you usually only see the looper threads at the edge. Many people sew with neutral shades and change only the needle threads when an exact match matters.

When threading, the order matters — usually lower looper, upper looper, then the needles. Your machine manual sets it out; the wrong order produces a tangle instead of a seam.

Buy four matching cones rather than four different leftovers. Different threads pull differently and the seam curls or draws in.

Good to know

Do I really need four matching cones?

For an even result, yes. Different threads have different tension and thickness; the seam then ripples or draws in and no amount of adjusting at the machine fixes it.

Can I use ordinary sewing thread in an overlocker?

For short runs it works, but not permanently. The small reels empty quickly and feed unevenly from the vertical pin, which makes the tension fluctuate.

Why is overlocker thread finer?

Because four threads together form the seam. If each were as strong as sewing thread the seam would turn hard and bulky – uncomfortable where it touches the skin.
