Motifs vary greatly in size. Small scattered prints suit every size and can be cut freely; large single animals want deliberate placement so that no head ends at a seam.

For combining: pick up a colour from the print for cuffing, sleeves or trousers. A marled plain jersey often looks more harmonious than a flat solid, because it is similarly lively.

Handle the fabric like any cotton jersey: wash before cutting, sew with a jersey needle and a stretch stitch, press from the reverse. The cut edge curls until the seam is closed.

Which motif size suits which children's size?

As a rule of thumb: the smaller the child, the smaller the motif. A large single animal that works on an adult shirt fills the whole front in size 92 and gets cut off at the sides.

How much fabric do I need for large animal motifs?

Allow at least one extra repeat, meaning the distance to the next repetition. With individually placed motifs, measure the spacing and calculate from that.

How do I keep the print looking good?

Wash inside out and not too hot, do not dry in the sun and press from the reverse. That keeps the colours strong and the surface smooth.
