Poplin is densely woven, which makes it drape more smoothly than a loose weave. The fabric stands slightly away from the body instead of clinging, and it keeps its shape after repeated washing.

Because only the colour matters here, the fabric suits every place where a pattern would get in the way: as trim, yoke, lining or backing, as a companion to a print, as a background in patchwork. Anyone sewing a garment from printed cotton will find the matching shade for facings and bands.

Cotton shrinks a little in the first wash. Wash the fabric before cutting in the way you will later care for the finished piece. Sew with a universal needle and an ordinary straight stitch.

What is solid cotton best suited to?

To everything that should stay calm: shirts and blouses, dresses, cushion covers, bag linings and patchwork. It is also the first choice as a companion to a print, because it does not compete with the pattern.

Do I need to pre-wash cotton?

Yes, it is recommended. Cotton contracts in the first wash. If you wash beforehand, the finished piece keeps the size you cut it to.

Is poplin stretchy?

No, it is a woven fabric without elastane and only gives slightly on the bias. Patterns meant for jersey will not work; choose designs intended for woven fabric.
