Unlike smooth rib cuffing, chunky knit shows an open, three dimensional structure. The material is heavier and softer, it closes less tightly and drapes pleasantly instead.

That suits everything that already has volume: cardigans, thick sweatshirts, winter jackets and hats. On thin jersey the combination looks unbalanced, because the cuffing weighs more than the fabric beside it.

Because chunky knit gives way, take off less when cutting than you would with fine rib and stretch the cuffing only lightly while attaching it. A jersey needle and a slightly longer stitch work well.

How does chunky knit differ from coarse rib?

Coarse rib is a firm rib with strong pull, chunky knit a looser, thicker knitted structure. Chunky knit is softer and fuller, but contracts less strongly.

Is chunky knit suitable for hats?

Yes, very much so. The soft handle sits comfortably on the forehead and the volume keeps you warm. Take care not to choose the circumference too tight, as the fabric pulls in less firmly.

Does chunky knit fray when cut?

The open edges roll and unravel more easily than fine rib. Cut shortly before sewing and finish the edge promptly, then the structure stays neat.
