In marling, fibres of different colour depths are spun together. Close up you see the individual flecks, from a distance a mixed shade with depth. Marks and small signs of wear show less on it than on flat solid fabric.

That makes marled jersey a practical choice for children's clothes and everyday shirts. It also works well alongside a print, because it stays calm without looking as severe as a pure solid.

Handle it like any cotton jersey: jersey needle, stretch stitch, wash before cutting. When cutting, check the direction of the grain, as the marl can look slightly different depending on the light.

What does marled mean?

The yarn consists of fibres in different colour depths that are blended before knitting. The result is not a flat shade but a surface with fine variations in lightness.

Does marled jersey go with solid cuffing?

Yes, and that is the usual combination. Choose the cuffing in the darker of the blended colours, and the finish looks deliberately placed rather than accidental.

Do marks show less on marled fabric?

Yes, because the surface is already varied. That is why marled fabric is popular for children's clothes and everyday shirts, where a flat solid would show every spot.
