The loose structure stores air and therefore keeps you warmer than a dense rib. At the same time it contracts less strongly, which makes the finish softer but also less tight.

That is why chunky knit works best with garments that have volume themselves. On a thin shirt it looks out of place, on a cardigan or thick sweatshirt it fits right in.

The open loops unravel at the cut edge more easily than fine rib. Cut shortly before sewing and finish promptly, then the structure stays neat.

Does chunky knit keep you warmer than rib cuffing?

Yes, because the loose structure traps more air. In return the finish closes less tightly, which can be a drawback on winter jacket sleeves in a draught.

Can chunky knit be used as a main fabric?

For hats, snoods and wrist warmers, yes. For whole garments it is usually too thick and distorts under its own weight; knitted fabrics are the better choice there.

How do I care for chunky knit?

Wash cool, do not spin and dry flat. Hung up, the fabric stretches out because the weight pulls the loops lengthways and the finish loses its grip.
