Antipilling Fleece

Anti pilling fleece is finished so that fewer bobbles form on the surface. It therefore stays looking good longer than ordinary fleece and suits jackets, jumpers, blankets and children's clothes.

Pilling occurs when loose fibres on the surface felt into small balls. With an anti pilling finish these fibres are treated so they come loose less often – the surface stays smoother.

Fleece keeps you warm at low weight, dries quickly and does not fray. Edges therefore need no finishing, which saves work especially on blankets.

For sewing, a universal needle and a slightly longer stitch work well. Press only at low temperature, as polyester fuses under heat.

When cutting, check the direction of the pile: it lies one way, and pieces laid in different directions look different in brightness in the finished item.

What does anti pilling mean?

The surface is treated so that fewer loose fibres come free and felt into bobbles. Pilling cannot be prevented entirely, but the fabric stays smooth much longer.

Do I need to finish fleece edges?

No. Fleece does not fray, because it is not woven. You can leave the edge raw or set it off as a design feature with zigzag or a decorative stitch.

How should I wash fleece?

Cool and without fabric softener. Softener settles between the fibres and reduces the insulating performance. Dry it in the air rather than in a hot tumble dryer.
