Jacquard

In jacquard jersey the pattern is created while knitting. It is therefore not a print but part of the fabric – on the reverse it appears as a negative, and it cannot wash away.

Forming the pattern makes the fabric slightly firmer than plain jersey. It drapes more calmly, holds its shape well and suits dresses, shirts, light jackets and children's clothes.

Because threads run across the pattern on the reverse, the fabric can be more delicate there. Watch out for jewellery and rough edges when wearing so no threads are pulled.

Sew as with any jersey, using a jersey needle and a stretch stitch. The cut edge curls less than on plain fabric, because the pattern stabilises the knit.

Is jacquard jersey stretchy?

Yes, but less so than plain jersey. The pattern takes away some elasticity. Check before cutting whether your pattern works with this reduced stretch.

Can I use the reverse as the right side?

Visually often yes, the negative pattern stands on its own. Just bear in mind that loose threads then lie on the outside and catch more easily.

Why does jacquard jersey curl less?

Because the patterned structure stabilises the fabric. Plain single jersey curls strongly, textured fabric far less – which makes cutting easier.
