Licensed fabrics are released by the rights holder – for private use, however. Anyone wanting to sell finished items commercially needs their own licence; for gifts and personal use there is no issue.

The characters are usually printed at a fixed size and arranged in rows. Check before cutting whether a whole figure fits on your pattern piece, and allow a little extra fabric for large motifs.

Handle the fabric like any cotton jersey. Wash licensed prints cool and inside out; strong colours and fine detail stay sharp longest that way.

Good to know

May I sell items sewn from licensed fabric?

As a rule, no. The licence covers the sale of the fabric, not commercial distribution of products made from it. For private use there is no restriction.

How do I plan cutting around characters?

Measure how far apart the figures sit and lay the pattern piece out first. That avoids a face ending at a seam or half disappearing.

Do licensed prints stay sharp after washing?

With cool washing inside out, yes. Hot washing, tumble drying and direct sun make fine detail and strong colours fade faster.
