The advantage of small, regular patterns lies in cutting: there is hardly any waste, because nothing has to be centred. That saves fabric and keeps planning simple.

With stripes and dots arranged in rows you should still mind the orientation. Lay all pieces the same way and align the lines at the side seams.

These patterns also work well for combination pieces: sleeves, yokes, pockets and cuffing can be cut from them without the overall look becoming restless.

They are just as useful on their own. A shirt in a small dotted print works for every age, which is why these fabrics are the ones that run out of the stash first.

Why do these patterns combine so well?

Because they are small and regular. At normal viewing distance they merge into a surface and step back beside a large motif instead of competing with it.

Do I have to align stars when cutting?

If the stars all point the same way, yes – otherwise they sit at an angle on one side. With randomly scattered stars you can cut freely.

Do dots and stripes go together?

Yes, if one colour links them and the scales differ. Fine stripes with large dots look coherent, while two patterns of equal size look restless.
