Scale decides the effect. Small flowers read as calm and can be cut freely, large prints make a statement and want deliberate placement so blooms do not end awkwardly at seams.

With directional patterns – flowers all growing upwards, for instance – every pattern piece has to lie the same way. Otherwise the blooms on the back piece stand on their heads.

For cuffing and neckline, a colour from the print works well, usually the darkest. It frames the pattern without competing with it.

How can I tell a directional floral pattern?

By the flowers all growing in the same direction. Turn the fabric a hundred and eighty degrees: if it looks different, the pattern is directional and all pieces must be laid the same way.

Which flower size suits which design?

Small patterns work anywhere. Large blooms need space – they suit dresses and loose tops, while on narrow sleeves or children's pieces they are quickly cut through.

How do I combine floral prints?

Most calmly with a solid or a very small pattern in a colour from the print. Two large floral patterns side by side rarely look harmonious.
