Many of these prints are directional – the vehicles travel one way. When cutting, make sure all pieces lie the same way, or the cars on the back piece drive upside down.

Large single motifs want deliberate placement. Before cutting, decide where the digger should sit on the finished shirt and shift the pattern piece until it fits.

For combining, plain jersey or small patterns in a colour from the print work well. Grey, navy and mustard reliably suit most vehicle motifs.

Why do vehicle motifs need attention to direction?

Because cars, diggers and rockets have a clear orientation. If pieces are cut in opposite directions, the vehicles stand on their heads on one side – which is immediately obvious.

Which colours suit construction motifs?

Usually grey, navy, mustard or khaki. These shades appear often in the prints themselves and tie the motif in without distracting from it.

Are large vehicle motifs suitable for small sizes?

Only to a degree. A large digger fills the entire front in size 92. For small sizes, scattered motifs or smaller prints are the better choice.
