Rib jersey shows fine lengthwise ribs and pulls in crosswise more than plain fabric. It therefore sits closer to the body and suits slim shirts, dresses and underwear.

Waffle jersey forms small cells that hold air. It looks softer and more casual, keeps you slightly warmer and is popular for children's clothes, long sleeves and comfortable pieces.

Both qualities stretch well but need a little more care when cutting because of the texture: do not pull the fabric, or the structure distorts and the seams ripple later.

What is the difference between waffle and rib jersey?

Rib jersey has fine lengthwise ribs and pulls in strongly crosswise, waffle jersey forms small cells and looks looser. Rib fabric sits closer, waffle fabric drapes more casually.

Is rib jersey suitable for cuffing?

For soft finishes yes, on necklines of shirts made from the same fabric for instance. For tight cuffs at sleeves and waist, proper cuffing fabric stands up better.

Does waffle jersey keep you warmer than plain jersey?

A little, because the cells trap air. The difference is noticeable but no substitute for sweat or fleece when it is really cold.
