Broderie anglaise shows punched and overstitched patterns on a firm ground. It is more stable than bobbin lace and therefore suits pieces that see wear.

When stitching it on, sew close to the edge so the seam does not run through the pattern. An openwork tape otherwise distorts and the holes become uneven.

Lace only tolerates limited heat. Press from the reverse at moderate temperature and use a cloth in between for delicate qualities.

As a finish on lingerie and children's clothes, lace sits comfortably against the skin as long as it is soft enough. Firm qualities suit decor and table linen better.

What is broderie anglaise?

An embroidered tape with punched and overstitched holes on a firm ground. It is more robust than bobbin lace and keeps its shape after washing.

How do I attach lace without distorting it?

Sew close along the straight edge and leave the pattern free. Guide the tape without tension, or the holes draw together and the edge ripples.

Can I dye lace trim?

Cotton lace yes, polyester only poorly. Check the material and dye a test piece before treating a larger quantity, as the result depends heavily on the fibre.
