Satin ribbon is lustrous on the face and matt on the reverse – or lustrous on both sides, depending on the quality. It suits tying, bows, straps, drawstrings and decoration on clothing and gifts.

Widths range from narrow ribbons for bows to broad strips for sashes and belts. For straps and ties, choose a medium width that knots well without adding bulk.

Satin frays badly at the cut end. Seal the end with a flame, cut it at an angle or fold and stitch it – otherwise the ribbon unravels before long.

Satin slips easily while sewing. Clips instead of pins, a fine needle and a slightly shorter stitch keep the ribbon in place.

For drawstrings, a ribbon is more comfortable than a cord, as it lies flat and does not cut in. Just make sure the channel is wide enough for the ribbon to move freely.

How do I stop the ribbon fraying?

Briefly melt the end with a flame if it is polyester. Alternatively cut at an angle, hem it or seal the edge with a little fabric glue.

Which width should I use for bows?

Narrow ribbons suit small bows on clothing, wide ones large decorative bows. As a rule of thumb: the larger the object, the wider the ribbon may be.

Is satin ribbon washable?

Polyester satin usually is, gently and not too hot. With dark colours on a pale ground, check whether the ribbon bleeds before sewing it in.
