Twill tape is a narrow, firmly woven cotton tape. It barely stretches and is therefore used to stabilise seams, as hanging loops, ties and edge finishes – an unassuming classic in every sewing box.

Its most important use is reinforcement. Sewn into a jersey shoulder seam, the tape stops the seam stretching out over time – it does the same job on bag edges and carrying handles.

As a hanging loop on towels, pot holders and aprons it is equally common. A short piece folded into a loop and caught in the seam lasts for years.

Wash the tape before sewing it in if the finished piece will be washed hot. Cotton tape shrinks; if it sits unwashed in a seam, it draws the fabric together later.

How do I reinforce a shoulder seam with twill tape?

Lay the tape into the seam as you sew, directly on the seam line, and stitch over it. It takes the strain so the shoulder does not stretch out.

Do I need to pre wash twill tape?

Yes, if the finished piece will be washed. Cotton shrinks, and an unwashed tape draws the seam together while the fabric beside it stays unchanged.

Does twill tape fray at the ends?

A little, but less than loose woven fabric. Fold the end over and stitch it, or seal it if it will remain visible.
