Velvet ribbon has a short, dense pile. The colour therefore looks deeper than on a smooth ribbon and the tape feels soft – popular for occasion wear, hair accessories, chokers, gift wrapping and home decor.

As with velvet fabric, the pile lies in one direction. Two pieces worked in opposite directions look different in brightness – so keep the direction consistent when cutting.

While sewing, avoid crushing the pile. A walking foot and light presser foot pressure help; pins leave visible holes, so clips are better.

Press at most from the reverse over a towel. Direct pressure on the pile creates shiny marks that can hardly be raised again.

For chokers and hair accessories an elastic quality is worthwhile, as it adapts. For bows and edges choose firm velvet ribbon that keeps its shape.

Why does my velvet ribbon look different in two places?

Because the pile lies one way and reflects light differently. Work all pieces in the same direction and the colour stays consistent.

Can I press velvet ribbon?

Only from the reverse over a towel and without pressure. Direct heat and pressure crush the pile, and the resulting shiny marks stay visible.

Is velvet ribbon suitable for hair accessories?

Very much so, as it is soft and does not slip. For hair ties choose an elastic quality, for headbands and bows a firm one.
