The effect depends on the seam being seen. In a closed construction seam it is lost; as topstitching, in quilting or when attaching appliqué it shows fully.

How quickly the colour changes depends on the thread. Short changes give a lively result, long gradients look calmer and recall hand dyed yarn.

In the bobbin, use a neutral shade from the gradient. Two gradient threads together look restless, because the changes do not line up.

For quilts a test piece is worthwhile. Only across an area does it show whether the rhythm of the changes suits the pattern or makes the result restless.

Where does multicolour thread work best?

In visible seams: topstitching, quilting lines, attached appliqué. In a closed construction seam none of the gradient can be seen, as the thread disappears between the layers.

Which thread should I use in the bobbin?

A neutral shade from the gradient. Two gradient threads together look restless, because the colour changes above and below do not coincide.

Can I sew whole garments with it?

Technically yes, sensibly rarely. The effect disappears in construction seams; use plain thread there and save multicolour for visible stitching.
