Unlike pompom or ruffle trims they are flat. They add hardly any bulk and can therefore be laid over finished seams, to emphasise a panel line or disguise a transition.

Stitch along both edges close to the border so the trim lies flat and does not lift in the wash. With narrow braids a single seam down the middle is enough.

Wash the trim once before attaching it if the finished piece will be washed. Some qualities contract and would gather the fabric underneath.

How do I attach passementerie trim?

Pin it or fix it with a fabric glue stick and stitch close along both edges. With very narrow braids one seam through the middle is enough.

Does the trim shrink in the wash?

Some qualities contract. Wash the trim beforehand exactly as you will wash the finished piece, and the fabric underneath will not gather later.

Can I lay trim over an existing seam?

Yes, that is a common use. The flat braid covers panel seams and transitions and looks like a deliberate design feature.
